The Tragic Love Story of Romeo and Juliet
Not all love stories have a happy ending like the Disney Princesses, sometimes they may turn out the completely opposite like Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare . There are many reasons why Romeo and Juliet turned out this way other than it is not a Disney Princess story. Firstly, the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet, change drastically very fast at the beginning of the play . Secondly, there are way too many characters that die in this play including Mercutio, Tybalt and even the two main character Romeo and Juliet, only within only a week of time. Lastly, characters in this story take marriage too lightly and arrange it almost in an instant which is not a good thing. Therefore the love story of Romeo and Juliet turned into a tragedy because of how extreme the pace of everything goes.
First of all, the changes in the play happen way too fast. Firstly, Romeo changes so fast in the play almost as if he was possessed by something. Right before the party, Romeo is saying how in love he is with Rosaline and just a few minutes later Romeo completely forgets about Rosaline whom he was so in love with just a few moments ago when he sees Juliet in the party: “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight!/ For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” (1.5.52-53). This is the first time Romeo sees Juliet and he does not know who Juliet is, yet he still falls in love with Juliet at that moment. Secondly, the other main character, Juliet, also changes really fast, from a innocent girl to someone who is so in love with Romeo and is willing to defies her parents. At the beginning of the play, Juliet does everything that her parents tell her: “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move;/ But no more deep will I endart mine eye/ Than your consent gives strength to make it fly.” (1.3.98-100). In the beginning of the play, Lady Capulet is talking about having her married to Paris, relative of the Prince, and Juliet says she will do whatever her parents wants her to do, but later when Juliet has met Romeo she refuses to marry Paris even if her father kicks her out of the house. The change in the two main character is way too extreme making it one of the main reason why everything turned out to be a disaster.
Another reason why the play turned out the way it did is because of the death of the many characters including the two main character in the play in such a short period of time. To begin with, the two secondary character, Mercutio and Tybalt die one day after the play begins in street brawl. Tybalt challenges Romeo to a fight and Mercutio accepts the challenge for Romeo but ends up dying, Romeo then finds Tybalt and kills him in revenge and goes into hiding. When the prince arrives, Benvolio tells him what happens: “O noble Prince, I can discover all/The unlucky manage of this fatal brawl./ There lies the man, slain by young Romeo,/That slew thy kinsman, brave Mercutio.” (3.1.141-144). Since Mercutio is related to the prince, the prince is very angry and banishes Romeo from Verona. Also, Romeo and Juliet also dies in the play which is really sad knowing that they have only met for not even a week. Romeo receives the news that Juliet is dead, not knowing that she is not really dead and decides to die with her. When Juliet wakes up,she finds Romeo dead and like Romeo, also decides to kill herself: “...O happy dagger!/ This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die.” (5.3.69-70). Juliet attempts to get some poison from Romeo’s lips but failed, but instead she finds a dagger and stabs herself with it. These four people are not the only ones that die in this play, Lady Montague and Paris also dies. From this one can see that death takes many people away in a very fast pace which leads to the unhappy ending.
Last but not least, characters in this play take marriage way too lightly. To begin with, Romeo and Juliet meets for no more than a few hours and already they are talking about getting married: “...If that thy bent of love be honourable,/ Thy purpose marriage, send me word to-morrow,/ By one that I’ll procure to come to thee,/ Where and what time thou wilt perform the rite;” (2.2.143-146). Romeo and Juliet meets after the party, when Romeo is leaving, Juliet tells Romeo to send her information about the arrangements for their wedding. This is really extreme, they have only just met each other and not to mention that their families are ancient enemies. Likewise, Capulet decides to have Juliet married to Paris in only a few days after Paris have met with him. This leaves Juliet with no choice but to go to Friar Laurence for help because she is already married to Romeo and does not wish to marry to Paris even if she may never see Romeo again: “I’ll to the friar, to know his remedy;/ If all else fail, myself have power to die.” (3.5.241-242). Juliet is so in love with Romeo that she rather die than marry Paris, which is one of the most important reason why everything turns out to be so sad. If the characters in Romeo and Juliet would take marriage more carefully and not so fast paced maybe everything will turn out differently.
In conclusion, Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy because of how extreme the pace of the play goes. First, the changes of the two main character Romeo and Juliet changes the play dramatically. Second, almost all characters die in this play, no matter who it is, from Romeo to Tybalt, they all die in some way and this is all within a week of time. Third, marriage should be something that is carefully planned, but in this play they make it seem like it is not so important at all. In conclusion, there is always a reason why things turned out the way it did.
